Hi Tom,
So I write to you again, this time with lofty praise. Secret Wars was outstanding. My feelings are certainly those of an untrained, inexperienced critic. Take them with a grain of salt. This is only the perspective of a fan. With that in mind, hear that secret wars is one of the most enjoyable pieces of literature I have experienced. In some ways an example of everything that can be good about comics. For those who have followed Hickman’s tenure at Marvel, an achievement regarding the superhero genre. Not just a complete and engrossing tale concerning Marvel’s first family. A story which manages to resolve several on going themes present in the Marvel universe since more recently the arrival of the Illuminati or maybe even as far back as the inception of the silver age. I’ve let myself interpret too much. I’ve probably inferred things which weren’t there. I don’t know. Regardless, this is such a thoughtful finality to so many fascinating considerations of Marvel’s multiverse. An ending to Hickman’s FF. A potential ending to the Illuminati concept. An ending to the idea that the only way to steward existence is through control. An affirmation that the most positive contribution one can make to society is to use their personal gifts to the best of their ability. That creation is a far more positive contribution than control. You mentioned in a newsarama interview that it was up to the history to judge secret wars place in comics. If i have any ability to discern how history will receive a story then time will show this crossover is one of the most ornate and introspective pieces of fantasy produced by Marvel. No, it’s not Watchmen. It’s not Maus. What it is is one of the most engrossing pieces of long form comic ever inked. The way it, as many have pointed out, concludes multiple Hickman themes. The way it resolves\responds to central issues of the MU since Civil War and all the way into the inception of the FF. The way it neatly folds disparate corners of Marvel into prime earth. I can’t say I’ve read a comic story as steeped in continuity, appreciable sci-fi and ethical conundrums maybe ever. I love it. I paid the money. I took the ride. I’ll probably retake it from the beginning again in the near future. You absolutely killed it. Bravo.
