>To all the self-righteous types who have commented about how “above it all” they are about this issue, let me quote a recent statement by another fan:
“Would you want Captain America, Batman, or James Bond to be replaced by a young upstart who has none of their virtues? Let me re-phrase: do you want Jar Jar Binks to replace your favorite comic book character, movie hero, video game hero, or fictional novel hero? Well, that is what this Sam Alexander character means to me, and several others, in a nutshell: a heavily favored company-backed Jar Jar Binks replacing Richard Rider, who was very much the Captain America/Superman of the Nova Corps.”
How about you Brevoort? Would you want a Sam Alexander type “idiot” (Loeb’s own description of his own character) replacing Derek Wildstar or Captain Avatar on your favorite, Starblazers? If you give a straight answer for a change - I bet you’d have to say no. >
I find that list a bit funny, given how long Bucky served as Captain America, and the couple of times that Dick Grayson has been Batman (to say nothing of the many, many Bonds.)
As for your question, I lived through decades of stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=yamato%202520&sm=3
And none of it changed a single moment of the stuff that I liked and enjoyed. And its existence wasn’t an affront to me that had to be put down or stopped or whatever it is that you think you’re doing.
Especially given that the Richard Rider that you liked is very different from the way the character had been depicted for 25 years previous to that series, you should appreciate that times change and things change. And that’s good, that’s all right, that’s how you get new stuff. And sure, it’s also sad when they’re not making any more of the stuff you did like, but that doesn’t alter the existence of the stuff you got and enjoyed. Nobody is coming to your house and feeding those NOVA issues you cherish into a shredder or anything.
This sense of entitlement, though—it’s one of the worst fan-traits that we have these days. Nobody is forcing you to read any NOVA comics that you do not like, and the existence of NOVA comics that you do not like are not an affront or an insult to you. They’re just something different.
