Dwayne “Maestro” McDuffie
>This month marks 3 years since the tragic passing of the incredibly talented writer Dwayne McDuffie. It was really nice to see a shoutout to McDuffie and Gregory Wright in the latest Agents of SHIELD ep for the creation of Cybertek in their Deathlok series. Would be great if you could share any fond memories working with Dwayne, especially editing BEYOND! and his FF run, both containing some of my all-time favorite comic moments.>
I don’t know that I really have any particularly noteworthy stories concerning Dwayne’s time on BEYOND! or FANTASTIC FOUR, apart from the usual story gymnastics.
Most of my noteworthy memories of Dwayne come from earlier, when he worked in the office as an Assistant Editor, and I was first his intern and then a fellow Assistant, and then his editor on DEATHLOK. For example, I can remember us spending a lunch trying out Silly Putty on all of the various formats of comics that were then being produced, as Dwayne had discovered that some of the more modern printing resisted Silly Putty’s ability to pull up an impression of the artwork.
Also, many meetings at which Dwayne would advocate calmly and sensibly but passionately for greater inclusionism among our stories.
